5 seconds! How it is the real difference between good and great?
5
seconds!
Unbelievable
but true.
5
seconds is the real difference between good and great.
Procrastination
or an overthinking mind can kill a great idea; right at its inception. The
moment there is a time lapse beyond 5 seconds - The intensity of the idea drops
significantly.
As
if your mind applies a sudden break to the thought.
Our
minds are vulnerable. If there is no action on the great idea, distractions
deviate us. There are plenty of distractions - within our minds and from
outside.
We
all have potentials to generate great ideas. But greatness can only be achieved
through the execution.
Whenever
there are options to choose from - There is an impulse which makes up our mind
within 5 seconds. If we have easy and difficult options to choose from - our
mind will prefer the easier one. So that it can easily get the sense of
accomplishment.
Unfortunately,
the not so good things are easier to be done. Like -
1.
It is easier to click next on a video streaming
platform when compared with logging out.
2.
Decision to remain lazy and inactive is easier
than getting up for the run.
3.
It is an automatic action from our subconscious
mind to unlock and stare mobile phone. This is far easier when compared with
efforts involved in reading or writing.
4.
Similarly, It is easier to continue scrolling
through Facebook, Instagram and twitter feeds when compared with doing what
really matters.
These
decisions involve far less time than 5 seconds. Our subconscious mind responds
to hundreds of such micro commands throughout the day. They want us to be
glued. That is why these platforms are not designed with a single click logout option.
YouTube skip ad has wait time of 5 seconds, only to strengthen the desire to
watch videos over there.
The
solution box
5
seconds; respond to great ideas in your mind with the action.
This blog is possible because I took the call to pause Mel Robbin's Tedx video and
start writing the first draft of this video within 5 seconds of coming across
this concept.
Never
delay the first step. Write it down. Tell someone. Do something about it. Execution
is the key.
Make
it difficult for social media and digital technology to have ease of our
access.
Implement
a mechanism to remind yourself of the 5 second rule.
Re-program
your sub-conscious mind.
1.
De-activate face unlock and finger print unlock
from phone.
2.
Your smartphone password or pattern could remind
you of the 5 second concept.
3.
Make your own mobile wallpaper like this one; to
remind you of this concept. You can download this one from the link in
description.
4.
Don't let your browser remember all your social
account password. Key in every time you log in.
5.
Remove unwanted apps
6.
Block unwanted notifications
7.
And play real sports
